“Columbus Breaking the Egg”, sketch by William Hogarth. According to an anecdote, Cardinal Mendoz, at a party given in honor of the sailor, jokingly asked him to put an egg upright, and he did so. Today, the egg of Columbus is called a simple solution to a seemingly difficult problem. Photo: The Print Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images.
Another version says that the riddle was invented by Columbus at dinner, when envious guests tried to discredit his discoveries, claiming that crossing the ocean was the easiest thing in the world. He asked who would put the egg upright. Nobody succeeded, then he did it, slightly breaking the shell. “Anyone can do it after being shown how”, he added. The whole world eats eggs and ascribes them the symbolism of rebirth, as evidenced by, for example, this wooden bird with eggs on a plate of calcite, found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun. 18th dynasty, about 1323 BC. Photo: Universal History Archive/Universal Images Group via Getty Images.
The variety of eggs is huge. We find them in fossils and archaeological excavations. We find them in nests. The egg collection is on display at the Jean-Frédéric Oberlin Museum (Lower Rhine). Photo: Ji-Elle - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia.
